On January 31, 2020, in Baku, Azerbaijan, during a meeting between Mr. Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA, and Mr. Taleh Ziyadov, Director General of Baku International Sea Trade Port in Azerbaijan, an exchange of views was held on the theme of improving logistics, compatibility of transport systems, creating and developing a sustainable international transport network.

Particularly, the discussion addressed the issue of joint efforts and work to attract additional cargo to the TRACECA routes and reduce the requirements for the number of requested documents, including in the direction between the ports of Baku and Aktau.

At the same time, taking into consideration the importance of further efforts to introduce and implement priority issues of transit and transport potential in the East-West direction, the parties agreed to create a joint working group on improving transport with the involvement and participation of representatives of seaports on an ongoing basis.

Among the priority issues of discussion and exchange of views, the issue of synchronization of actions within the framework of TRACECA and Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), which includes the Baku port and the effective work of the TITR were highlighted.

During the discussions, Mr. Ziyadov and Mr. Assavbayev emphasized the importance of institutional support and issues of normative consolidation of the introduced electronic document flow of seaports, as well as the ongoing work on digitalization.

In this regard, Mr. Ziyadov underlined that the Baku International Sea Trade Port, together with the OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities, launched the project "Promoting Green Ports and Connectivity in the Caspian Region".

The project is aimed at supporting Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in strengthening green ports and links in the Caspian region. Feasibility studies, seminars, and visits to leading international green ports will explore how best to use renewable energy sources, digitalization, trade and transport facilitation to ensure sustainable connectivity. There are also plans to create a digital platform for data exchange between the ports of the Caspian Sea of the three countries.
The parties stressed the priority of converting the world's transport corridors to digital format, pointing out that this is one of the main issues for major cargo owners in Europe and China.

In turn, Mr. Secretary General assured that TRACECA will try to enhance the work on the introduction of electronic cargo turnover in other Caspian ports, and also expressed hope for support of initiatives and projects within the framework of the implementation of the Strategy of the IGC TRACECA 2016-2026 for the development of routes of the international transport corridor Europe-the Caucasus-Asia.
