On August 17, 2022, the inauguration ceremony of the Global Transit Document (Pilot Project) took place in Avaza (Turkmenistan).

As you are aware, within the digitalization of the TRACECA corridor, an extensive work has been going on for two years to develop the Concept of the Global Transit Document together with the International Center for Transport Diplomacy and the Intergovernmental Council of Road Administrators. Representatives of the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, as well as representatives of the competent authorities of TRACECA member countries also actively participated in the meetings of the Working Groups. Representatives of the business community were also involved in the project.

During the ceremony, organizers of the GTrD, officials, businesses and international organizations shared their views on the future of the global transport system in post pandemic world and their vision of transformational effect of the Global Transit Document on the global supply chains operations in the coming years.

The Global Transit Document is a new approach in the organization of multimodal transportation, which is based on three basic principles: containerization, compliance with UN standards and recommendations, and the application of modern digital technologies.

The pilot application of the Global Transit Document will be carried out on 2 routes - one will pass through the territories of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and the second through the territory of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. The Working Group has developed a detailed step-by-step plan for the implementation of the Pilot Project, which includes many activities, including training of participants of the pilot transportation on the use of GTrD as a transit document on the TradeLens platform.

During the speech, the TRACECA Secretary General, Mr. A. Assavbayev expressed confidence that “this initiative will be able to contribute to the simplification of trade and cargo transportation conditions, especially for landlocked countries.”

Following the results of the event, the organizers and the Agency of Transport and Communications of Turkmenistan adopted a Joint Statement that confirms their commitment to jointly promote the Global Transit Document and its Pilot Project, and also calls on countries to participate in pilot transportation.
